Innovation, Research & Development

ABPL holds a prominent position in the bioenergy sector, having more than a decade of engagement in activities aimed at benefiting communities. Our endeavors necessitate evidence-based interventions supported by thorough research. In order to progress further in this endeavor, we have forged partnerships with various organizations and institutions to collaboratively design, assess, refine, and introduce cutting-edge solutions to the market. These achievements have been realized through the following methods:

Bioenergy Center of Excellence (CoE)

ABPL has forged a strategic alliance with Dedan Kimathi University of Technology (DEKUT) to collaboratively establish a Center of Excellence in bioenergy. This facility serves as a hub for education and creative thinking for businesses, as well as educational and training establishments such as schools, colleges, and universities. The center welcomes participation from a diverse range of stakeholders.

Below are the of services  for the CoE:

  • Testing and demonstration space for new technologies in the market (for private sector).
  • Research facilities for post-graduate students and researchers from various institutions on bioenergy.
  • Standard development and certification of technologies for regulation purposes.
  • Training and certification of artisans and enterprises engaged in bioenergy installations. These trainings and certifications can be a collaboration between ABPL, DEKUT, NITAandKIRDI (Kenya Industrial Research and Development Institute).
  • Demonstration site for public through organized tours.
  • Research on bio-slurry and post-harvest technologies related to bioenergy

Food and energy nexus

ABPL is investing in promotion of bioenergy innovations for use in agricultural value chains; this is aimed to enhance food security and improve livelihoods. Bio-slurry has a big potential in increasing crop production. ABPL is in a consortium of partners who are researching how value addition of bio- slurry can enhance its handling and distribution to increase its utility. ABPL will also continue working with partners to explore the potential use on bioenergy in post- harvest preservation of produce. Such an intervention targeting refrigeration services for aggregation centers for perishable produce can reduce post-harvest losses (e.g. in municipal markets).
